In celebration of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the founding of the Indochina College of Fine Arts, Le Auction House is proud to present the exhibition “20th Century Vietnamese Art”, which will take place from January 1 to 7, 2025, at No. 44 Yen Phu, Hanoi.

The artwork entitled “Saint Giong” by Vietnamese great painter Nguyen Tu Nghiem (1918 – 2016)

This special exhibition offers the public a rare opportunity to admire and pay tribute to the masters of Indochinese painting. Prominently featured are the renowned artist groups such as “Pho – Thu – Luu – Dam”, “Tri – Lan – Van – Can”, “Nghiem – Lien – Sang – Phai”, and “Nhan – Hoa – Hau – Kiem”. Alongside these iconic groups, the exhibition also showcases works by many celebrated painters from the French Indochina, resistance, and contemporary periods.

French painters played a key role in shaping the development of Vietnamese fine arts during this time. These writers, explorers, and photographers came to Vietnam and made significant contributions by teaching art to the local population. Prominent names among them include Victor Tardieu, Joseph Inguimberty, Alix Aymé, André Maire, and Evariste Jonchère. Their works, along with those of Henri Mege, have allowed art enthusiasts to explore their lasting influence on Vietnamese art.

“Vietnamese Lady” by Le Pho (1907 – 2021)

The exhibition also highlights the resilience of art during the resistance period in northern Vietnam, showcasing the works of outstanding artists who captured the spirit of the time. Typical artists from this period include Luu Cong Nhan, Le Huy Hoa, Tran Luu Hau, and Nguyen Trong Kiem, among others. Through an expanding range of creative themes, the artists’ artworks reflect a blend of realism, narrating both the pulse of the nation and the challenges of the period. These art pieces depict Vietnamese landscapes and people, while conveying their determination to defend the country and build up a brighter future.

The “20th Century Vietnamese Art” exhibition offers an enlightening journey into the past, exploring the diversity and richness of the Vietnamese art scene.
